When exposure has already occurred or is inevitable, patients can still act to prevent mesothelioma or other asbestos-related disease by being aware of their health. It often takes 20 to 50 years for the disease to be noticeable after exposure, but early detection can improve patients’ prognosis. Therefore, people can review their health, keeping track of health alterations, noting any new respiratory symptoms or new pains in the chest or abdomen, maintaining a healthy diet with a combination of fruits, vegetables and whole grains that lower the risk for cancer, undergo a mesothelioma blood test designed to detect the disease before any symptoms, and discuss with their physician regular medical tests such as diagnostic imaging tests or a pulmonary function test.

Being aware of the problem and keeping track of one’s overall health is one of the first steps to preventing severe problems. “When mesothelioma is diagnosed in its early stages of development, there are more treatment options available that may improve your survival and quality of life. Mesothelioma is much more difficult to treat when it reaches an advanced stage,”state The Mesothelioma Center. “If you have been exposed to asbestos and you are a smoker, you may be able to reduce your chances of developing an asbestos-related condition by quitting smoking. Studies show that smoking damages the lungs and can greatly increase the risk of developing lung cancer and asbestosis. There is no evidence that smoking increases a person’s risk for mesothelioma. If you were diagnosed with any asbestos-related disease, you should stop smoking immediately.”
