In this ehowhealth video, Dr. William Hughson, a professor of occupational diseases at the University of California in San Diego, talks about how mesothelioma was discovered.
Discover the three ways that malignant mesothelioma is treated.
Dr. Hughson says there ‘s evidence that mesothelioma may have been around in the 1700s and 1800s according to rudimentary autopsies, but many scientists deny this and think that mesothelioma has only been around since the 192os. The first real evidence of the disease came when Dr. Wagner discovered 33 cases of mesothelioma in South Africa in 1960 in people who worked with blue asbestos.
In the mid-1960s, cases of the disease were identified on the east coast of America and Canada in insulation workers, but it took another 10 to 15 years before the relationship between asbestos and mesothelioma was properly understood.
