If doctors suspect you have mesothelioma, you will need to undergo various tests to confirm the diagnosis and determine the stage of the disease.
Researchers are developing a better diagnostic test for mesothelioma.
According to the Mayo Clinic, chest X-rays or CT scans of your chest or abdomen may be required to check for any abnormalities, which may be followed by a biopsy. There are different biopsies depending on where the mesothelioma is located in the body (lungs, stomach, heart or testicles). The tissue taken during the biopsy will be checked by a pathologist for the presence of mesothelioma or other cancer.
Once mesothelioma has been established, doctors will need to determine the stage of the disease so they can plan treatment accordingly. Scans such as CT, MRI and PET scans are used to find what stage the disease is at and how far the mesothelioma has spread.
Tumor thickness may help identify mesothelioma patients who need aggressive treatment.
