- Stage 3: While still only on one side, the cancer will have spread further into the lymph nodes and maybe to surrounding organs and areas including the tissues between the lining of the chest wall and the ribs, or tissue of the chest wall itself, the fat in between the lungs, or the pericardium. Surgery is unlikely at this stage and palliative treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy will be offered.
- Stage 4: By stage 4, the mesothelioma will have spread to the opposite side of the body and potential metastasis to other organs, the lymphatic system, and blood vessels. Surgery is not an option at this late stage and chemotherapy and radiation therapy will be offer as palliative treatments.
