Which part of the body does it affect?
In most cases of sarcomatoid mesothelioma, the pleural cavity between the two layers of mesothelial is affected. This gap becomes blocked with asbestos which then allows cancer cells to grow that go on to restrict the natural movement of the lungs and impair breathing.
However, sarcomatoid cells can also be found alongside epithelioid and biphasic cells which occur in the lining of the abdomen and the heart.
How does it develop?
Invisible asbestos fibers are inhaled and become lodged in the lining of the lungs. The fibers create inflammation which can lead to the development of cancer cells.
