8 Things to Know About Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma

Subtypes
There are different subtypes of sarcomatoid mesothelioma that are categorized based on the different cells that are affected:

  • Lymphohistiocytoid: This is a type of mesothelioma where the tumors are made up of immune cells.
  • Desmoplastic: This is often misdiagnosed as a benign fibroid, and this type of mesothelioma is described as “bland.”
  • Heterologous: This is an extremely rare form where the cell types differ from the tissue affected, for example, bone cells found in tumors not near any bone.
  • Osteosarcomatous: This is another very rare form of mesothelioma where the tumors consist of bone cells.
  • Chondrosarcomatous: This is a form of mesothelioma where the tumor is made of cartilage cells.

Prognosis
Because sarcomatoid mesothelioma is so difficult to diagnose, many cases are identified when they are already at a fairly progressed stage. In addition, this type of mesothelioma is more likely to metastasize than other forms making it more difficult to treat. Most patients live for more than six months following diagnosis, with a few living for more than five years.

Women and younger patients are more likely to live longer following a sarcomatoid mesothelioma diagnosis.
