Staging
The staging of sarcomatoid mesothelioma depends largely on the size of the tumor and whether it has metastasized to other areas including the lymph nodes.
Treatment
Commonly doctors use a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy to treat mesothelioma, but in cases of sarcomatoid mesothelioma, surgery is often extremely difficult and the nature of the cells means that they can spread very quickly. Chemotherapy has proved to be largely ineffective at dealing with this type of tumor as the cells are resistant and radiation therapy relies on being able to isolate the cancerous cells from nearby tissue which is extremely difficult with mesothelioma.
Palliative care is given to help the patient feel as comfortable as possible. Researchers are working on a number of treatments to try and tackle sarcomatoid mesothelioma including immunotherapy and gene therapy.
