Decades ago, thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) injections were used for x-ray tests that were needed to visualize blood vessels or body cavities. Scientists now know the radioactive material can cause cancer. Thorotrast for x-rays was stopped in the 1950s, but those who received it then might begin showing symptoms of mesothelioma now.
