Radiation therapy is a well-known treatment for all types of cancer. Radiation beams are focused on the tumor and the high-energy external x-rays are used to kill the cancer cells.
Brachytherapy is another type of radiation, whereby the tumor is targeted with radioactive materials internally, rather than externally. Tiny seeds or rods of radioactive material are placed near the tumor–these can either remain in the person indefinitely or be removed at a later date.
Radiation can be used as a stand-alone therapy, but it is often used after surgery and alongside chemotherapy.
