While still only on one side, the cancer will have spread further into the lymph nodes and maybe to surrounding organs and areas including the tissues between the lining of the chest wall and the ribs, or tissue of the chest wall itself, the fat in between the lungs, or the pericardium. Surgery is unlikely at this stage and palliative treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy will be offered.
